Arterial hypertension (AH) has a high incidence in the world’s population and its etiology is multifactorial, involving genetic, environmental and psychological factors1,2. Its prevalence has progressively increased, especially among women, African descendants and the elderly. More than 50% of the subjects between 60 and 69 years of age and approximately 3⁄4 of the population older than 70 years are affected by AH1. Additionally, there is a positive and direct correlation between the elevated arterial pressure levels and the risk of cardiovascular diseases, regardless of gender, age range and ethnicity1,2. Hence, the understanding of the cell and molecular mechanisms involved in the genesis of AH is fundamental for the attainment of preventive and/or therapeutic measures, with the objective of controlling pressure levels and consequently, reduce the cardiovascular risks associated with AH. Therefore, this review aims at discussing the mechanisms involved in the arterial pressure control, focusing on the role of the vascular endothelium and the importance of physical exercise in the regulation of nitric oxide production by endothelial cells.

طراحی تاثیر تمرینات هوازی بر سطح پلاسمایی اکسید نیتریک و عملکرد اندوتلیوم عروق زنان یائسه

Background: Cardiovascular disease is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in postmenopausal women. Physiological decrease in estrogen levels and accumulation of visceral fat and being overweight, increase the risk of cardiovascular disorders in the menopausal years. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of aerobic exercising on plasma nitric oxide level and ...

Vascular nitric oxide and oxidative stress: determinants of endothelial adaptations to cardiovascular disease and to physical activity.

Cardiovascular disease is the single leading cause of death and morbidity for Canadians. A universal feature of cardiovascular disease is dysfunction of the vascular endothelium, thus disrupting control of vasodilation, tissue perfusion, hemostasis, and thrombosis. Nitric oxide bioavailability, crucial for maintaining vascular endothelial health and function, depends on the processes controllin...

Exercise and NO production: relevance and implications in the cardiopulmonary system

This article reviews the existing knowledge about the effects of physical exercise on nitric oxide (NO) production in the cardiopulmonary system. The authors review the sources of NO in the cardiopulmonary system; involvement of three forms of NO synthases (eNOS, nNOS, and iNOS) in exercise physiology; exercise-induced modulation of NO and/or NOS in physiological and pathophysiological conditio...

Effect of moderate intensity aerobic training on cardiac autonomic system function and nitric oxide levels in middle-aged males with metabolic syndrome

Background and Aims: The sedentary lifestyle in individuals with metabolic syndrome is a main threatening risk for their health. This study aimed to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise with 65% of maximal oxygen consumption on heart rate variability and vascular nitric oxide levels in middle-aged males with metabolic syndrome. Materials and Methods: In total, 30 middle-aged men with me...

Comparison of Effect of Piperine and Capsaicin with Tabata Exercise on Changes in Serum Nitric Oxide and Creatine Kinase of Kung Fu Boys

Introduction: Tabata exercise programs can produce free radicals and muscle soreness and herbal supplements may be helpful as mediators in response to oxidative damage and muscle stress. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the effects of these two supplements with Tabata exercise activity on nitric oxide and creatine kinase enzyme. Methods: The research was a quasi-experimental...
